Web Gems

Although I have been MIA from my blog action I have been actively writing, performing and teaching. I also have found myself, in these viral times Zooming through meetings and workshops and making use of several online resources. I’d like to recommend a few I became aware of through my work.

midnight_and_indigo_issue_2_black_women_writers_1024x1024@2xMidnight & Indigo is a wonderful magazine of Black women fiction and essay writers. I had a short story in their last printed magazine. The editor(s) have broad minds and hear voices of grace and truth in the stories and essays they publish. I went there today just to get an image and the correct URL and got pulled into a few essays. The website is a wonderful mix of essays, fictions, opportunities to buy a print magazine (support the word) and other delights. Check it out.

brenda and markFirst Voice, BrendaWong-Aoki and Mark Izu is an incredible performing arts organization based in San Francisco but working internationally and nationally with their blend of music and storytelling.  When COvid-19 cut off performance venues and schedules they took their magic online. They have been curating a dynamic series earth Dance 2020 full “Offerings to Mother Earth” featuring music, jazz and traditional from many cultures, story-telling, dance, poetry, song, hip-hop in short video performances each week.  It is a real healing feast for ears, eyes and heart. Scroll through and be entranced.

Narrative Paths JournalAn Evolving Architecture of the Human Voice is an intriguing site that explores the architecture of the mind. It features a series of fascinating interviews that range from film makers and writers, to a woman truck driver, an evolutionary biologist, journalist, entrepreneur and so much more .  Also featured editorials and book reviews and some visual art will give the humanist and philosopher in you some thought, this site is international and speaks to a broad range of ideas and peoples.

Jill Cox-CordovaJill Cordova is working on a series called “Do Something Different” brief video interviews are accompanied by articles based on interviews with experts on some concept raised in the artist interview. The first one up is a wonderful look at Sounds of Blackness and how they are using song and new compositions to help carry us through these times.  Take a read and a look. I personally really ;loved the blessing jar she and her husband created and thing I will start one in my home.  The videos can also be found on Youtube. The site she works out of is which is a Medium for a range of thought.  After viewing her piece I roamed the site and found an incredible magazine Zora and other tantalizing places. This is a writer’s site featuring strong writing and strong ideas and a real sense of a diversity in culture and point of view.

a braccia aperteOne of my most gratifying times last year was spent in Italy at the Casa della Poesia which is indeed a house of poetry. in Baronnissi Italy. Their press Multimedia Edizione released a bi-lingual book of my poetry, a braccia aperte/with arms open.  This organization is broadly international and the poets who they have hosted is a real who’s who of modern poetry that speaks to the world we live in and not the dust, however well sculpted, in any particular poet’s navel.  Go to their site and you can find many poets including video and audio.  Even if English is your only language you will find a wealth of exciting poets and poetry performances to explore.

If you are journeying around the web drop into some of these sites. Your time will be well spent.

Do you have a site you want to feature? Put a link here with a small description and help more people to see its wonders.
